What I’ve learned from my neighbours

Huge thanks to my friends and supporters who have joined me canvassing over the last seven weeks – together we’ve had hundreds of conversations in Bethnal Green West.

Some interesting themes are already emerging from what people have told us on their doorsteps:

  1. People love Bethnal Green but they are concerned about how things are going locally. The main complaints are around antisocial behaviour, drug dealing, littering, poor customer service by landlords and the council’s plans to make local streets more dangerous.
  2. Locals are excited by the idea of a properly independent local councillor. Nearly ¾ of the people we’ve spoken to are likely or very likely to vote for me in the May 2026 election. Everyone has their own reasons, but my independence is the most common reason people give for supporting me.
  3. If you listen to people in Bethnal Green, you find that there’s more that unites us than divides us. I’ve had positive conversations with people born abroad and around the corner, old and young, and lots of different ethnic backgrounds.

If I’m elected as an independent ward councillor for Bethnal Green West at the 7 May 2026 elections, I will be well positioned to act on those themes. I will:

  1. Push hard for progress on the top issues that I learn through my door-knocking over the ten months. I may not be able to solve complex issues on my own, but with the platform of an elected councillor, I will be able to raise the profile of problems and convene people to find solutions;
  2. Be genuinely independent. I will do what’s right, not what a party boss tells me to do; and
  3. Keep listening to residents, over the phone, email and at surgeries. And as an experienced and skilled project manager, I’ll respond quickly and resolve issues to the best of my ability. I will represent the full diversity of the area, not any one particular group.

I’m looking forward to meeting more neighbours and learning more over the coming months. If you have any questions or suggestions or you’d like to get involved, then please drop me an email on ted4bgw@gmail.com.

To finish with my favourite quote from the doorstep: “I don’t know how I’ll vote, but I hope you win!”
